Wind on the water - a glassy surface means light or offshore wind and clean waves. Chop and white streaks across the face mean onshore wind has got into it. Mornings are usually cleanest here, before the afternoon north-westerly fills in.
Size is deceptive on a cam - waves always look smaller through a fixed lens. Watch a few sets and use the surfers for scale rather than judging the wave alone.
Count the crowd - in July and August, Foz do Lizandro and Praia do Sul fill up by mid-morning. If the peak looks busy on the cam it will be busier by the time you park.
Pair it with the numbers - a cam shows you now, not later. Check the Ericeira surf forecast for swell height, period and wind over the next five days.
Learning? Foz do Lizandro and Praia do Sul are the forgiving ones, sandy bottom and gentler waves. Most surf schools teach at one or the other.
Surfing already? Ribeira d'Ilhas is the classic long right and the heart of the World Surfing Reserve. Praia da Calada picks up more swell when the centre goes flat.
Just watching? Pedra Branca on a big day is the best show in town, and you can see why it is for experts only.
