01 - The Beaches

Ericeira's Coastline

Ericeira sits on 8km of Atlantic coastline, with beaches ranging from tiny fisherman's coves to wide sandy stretches backed by dramatic cliffs. The water is Atlantic-cold (14-19°C depending on season), the sand is golden, and most beaches have lifeguards during summer months.

The Town Beach

Praia dos Pescadores

Ericeira's iconic town beach, nestled between the cliffs below the old town. Small, sheltered, and the heart of the town's relationship with the ocean.

Family & Surf Beach

Foz do Lizandro

Wide sandy beach at the river mouth. Ericeira's best beach for families, beginners, longboarders, and epic sunsets.

Sandy Cove

Praia do Sul

Protected sandy beach just south of the town center. Popular with locals, easy access, and a natural rock pool at low tide.

Dramatic Cliff Beach

Praia de São Lourenço

Dramatic cliff-backed beach at the northern end of the World Surfing Reserve. Wild, beautiful, and less crowded than the town beaches.

Tidal Pool Beach

Praia de São Sebastião

Small beach with a natural tidal pool - perfect for toddlers and non-swimmers. Right next to the town center.

Northern Beach

Praia do Norte

Quiet sandy beach north of the center. Less touristy, popular with locals, and a good alternative when the town beaches are packed.

Beach Guide

For families with small kids - São Sebastião has a natural tidal pool that's perfect for toddlers. Foz do Lizandro has a sheltered river lagoon. Both are safer than the open ocean beaches.

For sunbathing - Praia do Sul and Foz do Lizandro have the most space. Praia dos Pescadores is iconic but small and fills up fast in summer. Arrive early on weekends.

For surf - The beaches double as surf breaks, but for a surf-specific guide check our surf guide which covers each break in detail.

Water temperature - The Atlantic is cold. Even in August, the water rarely exceeds 19°C. A wetsuit is recommended for extended surf sessions year-round. For swimming, you'll acclimatize after a few minutes.

Safety - Swim between the flags when lifeguards are present. Many beaches have strong currents, especially on bigger swell days. If in doubt, ask a lifeguard or check the surf forecast.
