Praia de São Lourenço

Dramatic Cliff Beach · Northern end of World Surfing Reserve, 3km from center

01 - About

Praia de São Lourenço

São Lourenço marks the northern boundary of the World Surfing Reserve and is one of the most visually dramatic beaches in the Ericeira area. High cliffs, a wide sandy stretch, and the feeling of being somewhere genuinely wild.

The cliffs are the defining feature - towering limestone walls that catch the afternoon light beautifully. The beach faces west, making it another excellent sunset spot, though less accessible than Foz do Lizandro.

Surf: São Lourenço has a reef break that works on solid north swells. It's an advanced spot - rocky bottom, strong currents, and powerful waves when it's on. Not for beginners, but experienced surfers who make the trip north are often rewarded with uncrowded, quality waves.

The beach itself is wide and sandy at low tide, significantly smaller at high tide. It's less developed than the town beaches - no beach bars, no sun lounger rentals, no lifeguards outside peak summer. This is part of the appeal.

Access requires a walk down from the cliff-top car park via a steep path. It's not difficult but not suitable for those with mobility issues. Bring everything you need - there are no facilities at beach level.

The area around São Lourenço is also excellent for cliff walks - trails along the headland offer stunning views of the coastline and, on clear days, views south to the Serra de Sintra.
