São Sebastião is a small beach just north of the town center, known primarily for its natural tidal pool - a rock-enclosed pool that fills with seawater at high tide and provides a calm, sheltered swimming spot that's perfect for toddlers and non-swimmers.
The tidal pool is the main attraction. At the right tide, it's like a natural swimming pool - calm water, sandy bottom, and small enough that parents can relax while kids play safely. It's the reason families with very young children gravitate here.
The beach itself is small and rocky in parts, with pockets of sand. It's not the place for sunbathing marathons, but it serves its purpose as a sheltered, family-friendly spot close to everything.
Location is excellent - a short walk from the main square and the restaurants of the old town. You can easily pop down for a morning swim and be having coffee in the center 10 minutes later.
The promenade along the cliff-top connects São Sebastião to the main town beach and provides a pleasant walk with ocean views. There's a small playground nearby.
Tip: Check the tide times before visiting. The tidal pool is best at mid to high tide. At very low tide, it drains and isn't as useful for swimming.
Best for: Families with toddlers, non-swimmers, quick dips
