Ericeira is a dog-friendly town overall, but there are seasonal restrictions to know about.
Beach rules: During beach season (June 1–September 30), dogs are prohibited from most official beaches during the day. This is a nationwide Portuguese law, not specific to Ericeira. Outside those months, dogs are welcome on all beaches.
Dog-friendly spots year-round: The cliffs and coastal paths between beaches are always open to dogs and make for great walks. The trail between the town and Ribeira d'Ilhas is a local favorite. Some of the more secluded rocky areas below the cliffs are less policed and dogs are common there even in summer - though technically the rules still apply.
In town: Dogs on leash are welcome throughout the town. Many café terraces allow dogs, and the outdoor dining culture makes it easy to have your dog with you. Portuguese people are generally dog-friendly.
Vets and pet shops: There's a veterinary clinic in Ericeira and another in Mafra (10 minutes). Pet supply shops stock food and essentials. For specialty needs, Lisbon has a full range of pet services.
Accommodation: Many rental properties accept pets, but always confirm in advance. Some hotels allow dogs for a small surcharge.
Traveling with pets: If you're coming from within the EU, your dog needs a pet passport with valid rabies vaccination. From outside the EU, check Portuguese customs requirements - you may need a health certificate and microchip.
