Ban on harvesting and catching bivalves
The IPMA has banned the harvesting and sale of certain bivalves along the L5a Litoral Peniche – Cabo Raso coast as of 15 May 2026.
Lapa is closed due to chemical contaminants (cadmium). Mexilhão is closed because of lipophilic biotoxins that cause DSP. Ouriço-do-mar remains open. The agency also issued an alert for harmful phytoplankton and reminded the public that non-filter-feeding marine gastropods such as lapas are exempt from production-zone classification rules.
