Image of the day | Largo do Pelourinho, the historic heart of Ericeira
Largo do Pelourinho remains the historic centre of Ericeira. The square takes its name from the sixteenth-century pelourinho that stands there, a symbol of the town’s former administrative and judicial authority.
The municipal council moved to the square in 1644 and stayed until the council was abolished in 1855. The column itself was buried in 1863 to prevent theft and was rebuilt in 1924 on the orders of Mafra mayor Eduardo Burnay.
