Man, 49, killed in a home in central Ericeira; Judiciary Police investigating

A 49-year-old man was killed on Wednesday morning, 30 September, in a home in the centre of Ericeira, on Largo Condes da Ericeira, just off the old town's main streets. The GNR described it to CM Jornal as "a violent death", and the Polícia Judiciária (PJ), the national police force that investigates homicides in Portugal, has been called in.

What happened

The alarm was raised at around 10:30. Ericeira's volunteer firefighters were sent to the house together with an INEM medical team and the GNR. Fire commander Filipe Courela said the man was in cardiac arrest when help arrived, and INEM confirmed his death at the scene.

Accounts of the building differ. Courela told Observador it may be operating as a hostel, while CNN Portugal describes it as a rented house. According to local residents, the home is a flat above Bocca Pizzeria on the square, let out as a rental or short-term holiday let such as an Airbnb. The authorities have not confirmed the exact address.

GNR officers from the Ericeira post set up a security perimeter around the house and kept it in place while they waited for PJ inspectors to arrive from Lisbon. The body remained inside in the meantime.

The victim

According to CM Jornal, the man was 49 and of Nepali nationality. The first reports on Wednesday morning described him only as a foreigner of around 40. He has not been named.

The investigation

CNN Portugal reports that the PJ was brought in because of "indícios de crime", signs that a crime had been committed. CM Jornal, which also covered the story on CMTV, describes it as a murder. Police have not said how the man died, and no suspect or arrest has been reported so far.
