Miguel Blanco has released episode “In Between Tides” of his YouTube series “Impact”, addressing water pollution along Portugal’s coast. He describes sewage, plastics and agricultural runoff entering the ocean and causing health issues for bathers and surfers as well as biodiversity loss.
In partnership with Surfrider Foundation Europe, Blanco examines the Ericeira area. The local ETAR discharges polluted water into rivers and the sea because pipes are cracked and systems are overloaded. The legendary wave at Ribeira d’Ilhas has already been altered by an ETAR pipe. Surf coach José Maria Pyrrait notes that Europe’s first World Surfing Reserve should receive special care in every respect.
