Volta a Portugal cycling race draws crowds to Mafra streets [video]

The first stage of the 87th Volta a Portugal cycling race took place yesterday, covering 157 kilometres from Lourinhã to Queluz. The route passed through Mafra municipality via Barril, S. Lourenço, Santo Isidoro, Ericeira, Pinhal de Frades, Salgados, Palácio Nacional de Mafra, Igreja Nova and Cheleiros before finishing at Palácio Nacional de Queluz.

Francisco Campos won the opening stage. Dozens of spectators lined Avenida 25 de Abril and the area around Palácio Nacional de Mafra to watch the peloton pass through the town centre.
