O Gafanhoto is the kind of restaurant that every Portuguese town has - and that every visitor should find. It's a traditional tasca: unpretentious, family-run, generous portions, honest prices, and food that tastes like someone's grandmother made it (because she probably did).
The menu is classic Portuguese: grilled fish, arroz de marisco, bacalhau (salt cod) in various preparations, carne de porco à alentejana, and daily specials that depend on what's fresh. Nothing surprising, everything satisfying.
Portions are generous - Portuguese restaurant generous, which means you'll probably need to share or accept that you won't finish everything. The arroz de marisco feeds two easily and is one of the best versions in Ericeira.
The atmosphere is local and lively. Portuguese families on Sunday, fishermen at lunch, visitors who found the place through word of mouth. Paper tablecloths, loud conversations, a TV in the corner. It's not Instagram-beautiful, it's restaurant-real.
Prices are very reasonable - a full meal with wine for under €20/person is normal. Cash is preferred. No reservations needed except possibly on summer weekends.
