Ericeira is extremely safe. Portugal consistently ranks in the top 10 safest countries globally (Global Peace Index), and Ericeira - as a small, tight-knit town - reflects that.
Violent crime is virtually nonexistent. Petty theft (car break-ins at beach parking lots, unattended belongings on the beach) can happen during peak summer, as in any tourist destination, but it's uncommon. Use common sense: don't leave valuables visible in your car, and keep an eye on your stuff at the beach.
The town is very walkable and feels safe at all hours. The local community is welcoming to visitors and expats alike. Emergency services are reliable - the nearest hospital is in Torres Vedras (20 minutes) or Lisbon (35 minutes).
Ocean safety is the bigger consideration. Some of Ericeira's surf spots have strong currents and rocky bottoms. Always check conditions before entering the water, respect your skill level, and surf with others if you're unfamiliar with a break.
