What is the surf etiquette in Ericeira?

Ericeira's surf spots range from mellow and welcoming to serious and localized. Knowing the etiquette will keep you safe and earn respect in the water.

Universal rules:

• Don't drop in. The surfer closest to the peak has priority. If someone is already riding, don't take off in front of them.
• Don't snake. Paddling around someone to get closer to the peak and steal priority is bad form everywhere.
• Paddle wide. When paddling out, go around the breaking waves, not through them. Getting in the way of someone's ride is dangerous and frustrating.
• Know your limits. Don't paddle out at a spot beyond your ability. This endangers you and others.

Localism: Ericeira has a strong local surf community, and some spots - particularly Coxos - have well-known localism. Locals who have surfed these waves for decades rightfully expect respect. At heavier reef breaks, observe from the cliff first, wait your turn, and don't paddle straight to the peak. At beginner and intermediate spots like Foz do Lizandro and Ribeira d'Ilhas, the atmosphere is much more relaxed.

Crowds: Ribeira d'Ilhas gets very crowded, especially on weekends and during competitions. Patience is essential. If a spot is packed, consider checking an alternative break rather than adding to the crowd.

Respect the environment: Don't leave trash on the beach. The World Surfing Reserve designation exists to protect this coastline. Many local surfers participate in regular beach cleanups.

Being friendly, respectful, and self-aware will get you a long way. A smile, a "bom dia," and giving way on a wave you're not sure about will earn you more waves in the long run than aggressive paddling ever will.
