Alice Vieira writes that she sits daily at the café terrace by Praia do Sul. The owner’s five-year-old nephew, Manuel, often helps there, clearing tables, taking orders and recommending cakes.
On a recent day Manuel stayed home with a mild fever. The café owner said the boy was “barafustar imenso” because he felt he was needed. Customers agreed and laughed about his absence.
