Mafra | 51 million investment strengthens coastal defense of the municipality
The Portuguese Government unveiled the Programa de Ação para a Resiliência do Litoral 2040 (PARL 2040), a national plan to protect the coastline from rising sea levels, stronger wave action, erosion and coastal flooding. The strategy sets priorities, funding tools and a simpler governance model, with the APA remaining the lead agency for coastal resources.
For Mafra, the 2025-2030 phase includes cliff works, natural-system measures, beach upgrades and better access. The plan also covers the reconfiguration of the Porto da Ericeira and scheduled maintenance dredging. Total investment for the municipality reaches 51 507 276,74 €, with an additional 800 000 € earmarked for 2030-2035 to maintain rock armour and concrete walls on local beaches.
