POLITICAL OPINION | The Fort and the cliff
Porto da Calada beach will remain closed for the 2026 bathing season after the Portuguese Environment Agency cited cliff instability. The beach is one of five in Mafra municipality shortlisted for the national Praia Acessível award.
Work continues on Ericeira’s seafront. The Forte de Nossa Senhora da Natividade went to tender with a base value of 820,808.64 euros and a 330-day execution period. The municipality has also purchased boats and kayaks for the Centro Náutico at a cost of 79,775.21 euros.
David Sardinha, PSD councillor, notes that these projects do not address cliff erosion or sea access and questions what steps the council has taken since March to reopen the beach.
