Cascais, Mafra and Sintra take important steps in creating a Marine Protected Area
Cascais, Mafra and Sintra have entered a new phase of their joint Marine Protected Area project. On 29 July 2026, municipal representatives joined the NRP Andrómeda to observe seabed mapping work carried out by the Instituto Hidrográfico. The initiative is supported by the Fundação Oceano Azul, the Fundo Ambiental and the Portuguese Government.
Technical and scientific studies are now under way to map marine habitats, species and ecosystems. Socio-economic surveys have also begun to assess maritime activities in the three municipalities. Public consultation sessions are scheduled for late September and early October in Cascais, Mafra and Sintra.
