Creation of the Cascais | Mafra | Sintra Marine Protected Area enters new phase
Cascais, Mafra and Sintra municipalities have advanced the creation of a Marine Protected Area of Community Initiative (AMPIC) that began in 2021. The project, developed with Fundação Oceano Azul and supported by the Fundo Ambiental and the Portuguese Government, has entered its second phase with technical and scientific studies underway to map marine habitats and species.
On 29 July, municipal representatives boarded the NRP Andrómeda to observe seabed mapping work. Vice-President Francisco Duarte of Sintra, Vice-President Luís Capão of Cascais and Councillor Eduardo Silva of Mafra took part. Public consultation sessions are scheduled between late September and early October in the three municipalities.
